Based at the only medical school in New Mexico, the UNM Department of Psychiatry combines innovative educational and research opportunities with excellent clinical care for one of this nation’s most beautiful and sparsely populated regions. Our unique position in the state means that our faculty, fellows, residents and medical students daily study and work with a diverse socioeconomic and medically complex patient population.

Known as “the Land of Enchantment,” New Mexico is an ideal place to learn, live and raise a family. This high desert state is located at the tail end of the Rocky Mountains, with more than 300 days of sunshine per year, a cost of living that is 5 percent less than the national average, an international art market and opera house in Santa Fe, world-class skiing in Taos, and archeological and geological wonders throughout the state.
New Mexico also has a long rich history and strong rural base with a diverse ethnic and socioeconomic population including members from 19 Native American pueblos, the Jicarilla Apache Nation, Mescalero Apache tribe and the Navajo Nation. The Hispanic population in New Mexico is among the highest in the country.
