Residential Rehabilitation and IOP Psychiatry

3 half days per week for 6 months

This required rotation is located at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center’s STARR residential rehabilitation unit and the SUD Intensive Outpatient Programs.

Addiction fellows on this service assess and follow approximately 4-6 clients concurrently in the residential program and perform psychiatric diagnostic interviews on 2 new outpatients per week. They actively participate in planning in the interdisciplinary treatment team in both residential rehab and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and are responsible for medication management, discussing cases with the attending psychiatrist and developing comprehensive treatment plans.

The most common diagnoses fellows manage are PTSD, alcohol dependence and opiate dependence. The spectrum includes major mental disorders including MDD, BPAD, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and abuse and dependence on all major classes of drugs of abuse. In addition, fellows run a therapy group of their choice for residential rehab clients for which they receive supervision. Fellows participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings both in the residential rehab and the IOP.
