III Rural/Telehealth Track
In their second year, all fellows receive didactic training in rural psychiatry, and spend ½ day per week (or its equivalent) with a child psychiatrist supervisor providing telepsychiatry and site visits to a rural site in New Mexico. They provide consultation or direct service.
The rural/telehealth track allows interested fellows to pursue rural/telehealth medicine beginning in their first year as follows:
Year 1
- spend the equivalent of one day per month going to a rural site or participating in telehealth
- opportunity to work with a mentor to do research in an area related to rural psychiatry
Year 2
- spend the equivalent of one day per week at a rural site (an increase of ½ day/week from the usual amount spent at rural site in the 2nd year) or split the time between rural site and telehealth from Albuquerque
- elective time of ½ day per week for 4 months can be devoted to an area related to rural psychiatry (e.g., research in areas such as cross cultural issues, systems issues, etc.)
