Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship

Our department emphasizes solid core training in geriatric psychiatry.  We also encourage our fellows to pursue their own interests.  Take a look at our broad range of electives.

Our Fellowship's Goals are to:
• train specialists to directly meet community needs
• educate other medical providers in effective elder care

Geriatric Psychiatry is one of the most under-resourced subspecialties  in New Mexico.  At the same time, the State's over-65 population will soon exceed the national average.  What does this mean to you?  There are many wonderful learning and professional opportunities here.

In everything we do, we strive to
• maximize quality of life
• maintain independence and function
• provide culturally-sensitive healthcare to our elderly patients in New Mexico and Southwest region.

UNM Health Sciences Center
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is the only academic medical center for the state.  Its hospital system serves as the Level 1 trauma center for New Mexico and a tertiary referral center for the greater Southwest Region.  The HSC serves as a diverse ethnic and socioeconomic population including members of 19 Native American pueblos, 2 Apache nations and the Navajo Nation. The Hispanic population  in New Mexico is among the highest in the country.

New Mexico
New Mexico has a long rich history and a strong rural base. It is also home to Sandia National Labs and Los Alamos National Labs. Our Department’s Center for Psychiatric Research collaborates on projects with the MIND Research Network which, in turn, partners with Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Colorado-Boulder to study mental illness and brain disease suing cutting-edge technology.

New Mexico is known as “the Land of Enchantment” for a reason. It’s an ideal place to learn, live and raise a family. A high desert state at the tail end of the Rocky Mountains, New Mexico has more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Our cost of living is 5 percent lower than the national average.
