Consultation Liaison - CL

20% time for 12 - 24 weeks

This growing field merits its own rotation. Geriatric psychiatry fellows serve as consultation-liaison psychiatrists assessing elder patients on the medical/surgical wards of the University of New Mexico and Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center hospitals. Fellows develop skills in assessing and treating elderly patients with complex medical, psychiatric, and psychosocial disabilities.

Fellows build on their general psychiatry residency and provide teaching for medical students, residents of other specialties and patient-care teams. They develop skills in communicating with colleagues, chaplains, patients and their families. Fellows also participate in the administrative management of the consultation-liaison service.

Ethics are integrated into clinical work with assessment of decision-making capacity and knowledge of the medico-legal issues facing older patients in the context of acute inpatient medical/surgical care.
