Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient

Minimum of 24 but up to 48 weeks at 40% time

This critical rotation features experience in managing one team of eight patients. Fellows also meet daily with multidisciplinary staff in fields including nursing, social services, and recreational therapy.

The primary diagnoses in the inpatient unit are:

  • mood disorders
  • schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
  • dementia –related behavioral issues
  • substance abuse.

There are also cases of eating disorders on the unit.

While on this rotation, fellows may participate in therapeutic activities and clinical research studies. They also have many opportunities to teach psychiatry, internal medicine and family practice residents as well as medical student clerks.

The inpatient rotation includes three or more months of ECT training, after which fellows should be competent to administer this therapy independently.
