Rehabilitation-Palliative Care

20% time for 12 - 24 weeks

Fellows rotate through University of New Mexico Hospital or the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center’s rehabilitation ward. The latter location also encompasses palliative care and hospice patients.

During this rotation, fellows work with a multidisciplinary team of experts including palliative care doctors, nurses and social workers to relieve the pain and other symptoms patients suffer due to illness. Fellows also learn about the spiritual, ethical, and clinical issues which arise when treating patients in this context. Patients’ primary medical diagnoses are cancer, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s Disease, AIDS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis and Traumatic Brain Injury.
