Rural Outreach and Native American-Ethnogeriatrics

Cultural competency as defined by respected ethno-geriatrician Gwen Yeo, Ph.D. is “a set of integrated attitudes, knowledge and skills that enable a health care professional or organization to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups and communities.”

While the geriatric population is growing in our country, it is also becoming more diverse. Within the next few decades, one-third of our over-65 population is projected to be from one of the four minority categories (African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Native American).

New Mexico’s over-65 population will soon exceed the national average. The state’s ethnic diversity and expansive rural communities provide unique opportunities in Native American, Hispanic and rural subspecialty healthcare.
