The Psychosomatic Medicine and Consultation Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of New Mexico is the first and only fellowship of its kind available to qualified psychiatric residents in the state. It is a one-year program that trains fellows to act as expert psychiatric consultants in medical and surgical inpatient and outpatient settings.

Areas of expertise that fellows develop during their training include:

  • Psychiatric manifestations and complications of medical disease
  • Medical manifestations and complications of psychiatric disease
  • The interrelationship of psychological processes and physiological processes.

This type of training is particularly relevant to psychiatric care delivery in the 21st century as Recovery and Medical-Home models are implemented in New Mexico and nationwide.

In addition to the training they receive, successful graduates of the fellowship will find that opportunities abound for board-certified psychosomatic psychiatrists in the Southwest. The area is underserved and the psychiatric consultation service at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) in 2011 alone performed approximately 1400 new patient consultations. The UNM hospital system is the only academic medical center and Level 1 trauma center for New Mexico and is also a tertiary referral center for the greater Southwest region. For these reasons, fellows can expect to receive excellent preparation in treating highly complex medical and psychiatric patients.
