The Institute for the Development of Education and Advancement of Science (IDEAS)

IDEAS In Psychiatry

Through the generous gift from a grateful family, the University of New Mexico Department of Psychiatry has been able to found an institute dedicated to professional and public education. Our method is simple; we bring the best and the brightest to Albuquerque for up to a week to work with our residents, fellows, faculty and other mental health professionals in their specialized fields. While in New Mexico, many of our distinguished visiting scholars give public lectures and all participate in the Department’s ongoing Grand Rounds and present smaller workshops. During its first year, IDEAS in Psychiatry brought Robert Michels, MD  ; Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD  ; Phillip Resnick, MD  ; and David Ames, MD  to the UNM Department of Psychiatry.

In addition, the Department of Psychiatry’s Institute for the Development of Education and Advancement of Science has – and will continue – to encourage our current faculty, fellows and residents to pursue their own educational interests through agreed-upon sponsorships. For residents, this means that IDEAS will facilitate experiences in training locally, regionally and nationally.

All members of the Department who avail themselves of this benefit are expected to bring back what they’ve learned and share it with others.
