Robert Freedman, M.D., is a leading researcher in the neurobiology of schizophrenia. His investigations of genetic variants that affect the risk for schizophrenia led to new experimental treatments in adults. They also offered avenues for research, with pregnant women and their newborn children, to prevent abnormalities in early brain development that may produce mental illness later in life. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Freedman has received the William K. Warren Award of the International Congress of Schizophrenia Research; the Merit Award of the National Institute of Mental Health; the American Psychiatric Association Research Award and its Distinguished Service Award; and the Distinguished Investigator Award of the National Association for Research in Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders.
