Congratulations to Mohamad Khafaja, MD, who has been named a 2013-2014 winner of the Educational Excellence Awards (Apple for the Teacher) within the UNM School of Medicine.
“Dr. Mohamad Khafaja was recognized for excellence in teaching in Phase II clerkships,” says Deborah Dellmore, MD, Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry. “He was also nominated by residents for excellence in residency teaching. The award, from Undergraduate Medical Education, acknowledges gifted teachers who excel in three areas: motivating learning, facilitating learning, and establishing positive teacher-learner relationships. Students and residents commented that Dr. Khafaja always took the time for teaching.”
According to the UME website, nominations for the awards are made by students, residents and faculty. The UNM School of Medicine Curriculum Committee then votes on the submissions.
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Khafaja as a member of our faculty. The education of psychiatric residents and medical students is of great importance for the Department,” says Mauricio Tohen, MD, DrPH, MBA. Dr. Tohen is Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry.
